Decatur Presbyterian Church of Decatur, AL » God of Order

From the very beginning, we see God’s orderly nature in creation. Genesis 1 depicts a meticulously structured process where God brings order out of chaos, reaching its end in a world that is beautiful and harmonizes with itself. This principle of divine order is not just about structure for its own sake; it’s about creating an environment where life can thrive.

There is beauty in order, which can be found in both the form and function we see around us every day. Whether it’s ants marching in line, the intricate pattern of a spider’s web, or the regular rising and setting of the sun, order is a testament to God’s design. The beauty of the ordered world stands as one of our best apologetics against atheism. God’s generosity in bringing order and beauty shows his kindness.

This sense of order extends beyond the naturally occurring things in the world to the way God equips his Church to flourish. It’s interesting that Paul invokes God’s structured nature (1 Cor 14:33) to emphasize the importance of order within local churches, particularly in worship and communal life. This divine attribute of orderliness is woven throughout Scripture and is vital to the life and mission of the Church. Paul writes, “But all things should be done decently and in order” (1 Cor 14:40). This encouragement to maintain order extends to all areas of church life, ensuring that we reflect God’s character in our actions and organization.

One of the ways God manifests his order in the church is through the spiritual gift of administration. Paul lists this gift in 1 Corinthians 12:28, highlighting its importance alongside other key roles. The gift of administration involves organizing, planning, and managing resources effectively to support and further the church’s mission. It’s a gift that ensures our communal efforts are coordinated and our ministries run smoothly, ultimately enabling us to serve God and our community more effectively.

In my position as the Administrative Director, my goal is to bring greater cohesion and efficiency to our various ministries and operations. My role is designed to support our session, staff, and volunteers, ensuring that all our activities align with our mission and vision. However, this task is something we can all embrace. By fostering an environment of order and coordination, we can better focus on worship, community, discipleship, and service. My hope is that we can more clearly work toward our mission of inviting everyone to love and follow Jesus with this orderly mindset.

I am excited to serve in this capacity and look forward to partnering with each of you. Together, let us embrace the beauty of God’s order and the blessings that come with it.
